FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
IT’S OFFICIAL: WATSON TO RUN FOR STATEHOUSE
Positive Campaign to Focus on Political Reform and Local Issues
(Galesburg) Galesburg native Josh Watson announced today that he is a candidate for State Representative for the 94th District. Watson made the announcement Wednesday on the steps of the Knox County Courthouse before a crowd supporters. The announcement ends weeks of speculation about Watson’s run against incumbent Don Moffitt (R-Gilson), who is entering his fourth decade in political office.
"I’m running for office because I believe that it’s time for a change in Springfield. I’m committed to ending special interest politics and returning government to the people," said Watson. "I’ll dedicate every ounce of energy I have to serving the public and fighting for legislation that puts people before politics."
Watson said his positive campaign will focus on the needs of the area. Watson will unveil specific proposals to improve elementary and secondary education throughout the campaign. Watson also highlighted the need to protect family farms and help seniors. One issue he will be talking to area residents about is the need for political reform.
"There is a perception that our government is for sale to the highest bidder. It’s a real crisis in government because if people don’t respect the political process, they won’t respect the law," Watson said. "John McCain really struck a nerve when he said we need to end the stranglehold that special interests have on the political system. I’m running because I think it takes a political outsider to get the job done."
Watson feels confident about his chances in the Fall match-up. He is relying on the grassroots support of family, friends, and fellow Democrats to get his message out. Watson, who has never sought office before, says it’s a little intimidating to go up against someone with Moffitt’s political connections and campaign war chest, but he feels up to the challenge.
"I don’t think people elect someone because they are friends with the Governor or have a long resume. People aren’t as interested in how many offices you’ve had in the past. They want to know what you’re vision is for the future," said Watson. "I will be going door-to-door throughout the district to talk about my vision for the future. I’m committed to serving the public, restoring faith in our political system, and fighting for the issues we all care about."
Josh Watson is the son of John Watson, Knox County Coroner, and Peggy Watson. He recently returned to Galesburg to help run the family business after completing a two-year public service commitment through the national AmeriCorps program, where he led education efforts, provided disaster relief for Oklahoma City tornado victims, and even fought forest fires. Josh attended Galesburg High School and earned his Bachelor’s degree from Loyola University, where he was President of the 5,000-member student body and graduated with Honors.
