House Redistricting Subcommittee Convenes
Public
Hearing in Rockford
Rockford– Today a subcommittee
of the Illinois House Committee on Redistricting held a public
hearing in Rockford to gather local input on re-map process.
"Rockford has exploded in population
and diversity which is why we need public input on the redistricting
process," said Joel Brunsvold (D-Rock Island), who chaired
today’s subcommittee hearing. "Local hearings are very important
to the representation of this region for the next ten years."
Representatives from several
local governments testified, including Doug Scott, Mayor of Rockford
and Mickey Goral, Rockford Township Supervisor. In addition, numerous
civic community organizations were represented including La Voz
Latina, Pilgrim Baptist Church, Zion Lutheran Church, AFSCME and
many others. Dr. Alan Brown, Superintendent of Rockford’s Board
of Education, and Rick McVinnie, head of Rockford’s Mass Transit
District, also provided testimony.
The Winnebago County hearing
was one in a series being held across the state over the next
few weeks to help legislators in their effort to redraw the boundaries
of Illinois’ legislative and Congressional districts.
