House Redistricting
Subcommittee Convenes
Public Hearings in Marion and Carbondale
MARION–
Today a subcommittee of the Illinois House Committee on Redistricting
held public hearings in Marion and Carbondale to gather local
input on the re-map process.
"The local
hearings are an important part of the redistricting process,"
said Rep. Chuck Hartke (D-Effingham). "Southern Illinois
residents deserve to have their views and suggestions known. Hopefully,
listening to a wide range of ideas and feedback will help us in
our task of drawing a fair and accurate legislative map."
Representatives
from several local governments testified, including Carbondale
Mayor Neil Dillard, Williamson County Board Chairman Rex Piper,
Union County Clerk Bobby Toler, and Perry County Sheriff Keith
Kellerman. In addition, officials from numerous community organizations
such as Southern Illinois Health Care, RIDES Mass Transit, Mt.
Vernon and Massac County NAACP chapters, Shawnee Development Council,
and Golden Circle Senior centers offered input on how the new
legislative map is likely to impact their members.
The Southern Illinois
hearings are two in a series being held across the state over
the next few weeks to help legislators in their effort to redraw
the boundaries of Illinois’ legislative and Congressional districts.

information on the redistricting process and schedule, or updated
population data can log onto the legislature’s new redistricting
