House Redistricting
Subcommittee Convenes Public
Hearing in Waukegan
Waukegan
– Today a subcommittee of the Illinois House Committee on Redistricting
held a public hearing in Waukegan to gather local input on the
re-map process.
"It is important
that we hear testimony from local officials and community groups
throughout the state before we propose a map," stated State
Representative Louis D. Lang, who chaired today’s subcommittee
hearing. "The ulimate goal is to draw a map that fairly and
accurately reflects the population changes our region has undergone
over the past ten years."
Representatives
from several local governments testified, including Suzi Schmidt,
Chairperson of the Lake County Board, William Durkin, Mayor of
Waukegan, and Pamela Althoff, Mayor of McHenry. In addition, numerous
community organizations such as the Lake County NAACP, Latino
Coalition of Lake County; Lake County Urban League, McHenry County
Defenders; and McHenry County Realtors offered input on how the
new legislative map is likely to impact their members.
The Waukegan hearing
was one in a series being held across the state over the next
few weeks to help legislators in their effort to redraw the boundaries
of Illinois’ legislative and congressional districts.
