House Redistricting Subcommittee Convenes Public
Hearing in Champaign
Champaign
– Today a subcommittee of the Illinois House Committee on Redistricting
held a public hearing in Champaign to gather local input on the
re-map process.
"Our state
has experienced significant population changes over the past ten
years. Gathering input at local hearings will allow us to draw
a legislative map that best reflects these changes," said
state Rep. Chuck Hartke (D-Effingham), who chaired today’s subcommittee
hearing.
Representatives
from several local governments testified, including Urbana Mayor
Tod Satterthwaite, former state Rep. Helen Satterthwaite, County
Board Chairperson Patricia Avery and Rantoul Village President
Joe Brown. In addition, numerous community organizations such
as the League of Women Voters and Illinois Student Government
offered input on how the new legislative map is likely to impact
their members.
"It is important
that we reach out to local leaders and community organizations
to gather input on the best way to draw a fair and representative
legislative map," said Rep. Kurt Granberg (D-Carlyle) who
was also in attendance. "Local people have a significant
stake in ensuring that the re-map process reflects their communities’
needs."
The Champaign
hearing was one in a series being held across the state over the
next few weeks to help legislators in their effort to redraw the
boundaries of Illinois’ legislative and Congressional districts.
