CHICAGO – Today the Illinois
House Committee on Redistricting held its second hearing intended
to gather public input on the re-map process. Speaker Michael
J. Madigan and Minority Leader Lee Daniels co-chaired the meeting
in a packed James R. Thompson Center committee room.
"This is a very critical
phase in the redistricting process. The task of developing a fair,
accurate map necessitates input from the many groups and communities
that have undergone changes over the past ten years," said
Madigan.
Representatives from numerous
community organizations testified, including Ann Kalayil of the
Asian American Redistricting Committee, Dr. Paul Street of the
Chicago Urban League, Michael Rodriguez of the Mexican American
Legal Defense Fund, and JoAnn Robinson of the NAACP. Witnesses
offered input on how the new legislative map is likely to impact
their members.
Today Madigan released a list
of 10 new regional subcommittee hearings that will be added to
the list of 11 he announced earlier this week. The regional meetings
will enable the committee to hear from local leaders and organizations
throughout the state.

process and schedule, or updated population data can log onto
