SPRINGFIELD – Today the Illinois
House Committee on Redistricting held its first in a series of
hearings intended to gather public input on the re-map process.
Speaker Michael J. Madigan and Minority Leader Lee Daniels co-chaired
the meeting in a packed Statehouse committee room.
"This is a very critical
phase in the redistricting process. The task of developing a fair,
accurate map necessitates input from the many groups and communities
that have undergone changes over the past ten years," said
Madigan.
Representatives from several
local governments testified, including Ald. Betsy Stockard of
Decatur, Ald. Frank McNeil of Springfield, and Doris Turner of
the Sangamon County Board. In addition, numerous community organizations
– ranging from the NAACP to the Mexican American Legal Defense
Fund – offered input on how the new legislative map is likely
to impact their members.
The full Committee’s second
public hearing will take place in Chicago this Friday, April 24,
at 9 a.m. in Room 16-503 of the James R. Thompson Center, 100
West Randolph. Madigan released a list of 11 regional subcommittee
hearings to take place in coming weeks throughout the state.
