SPRINGFIELD --- The first round
in a series of hearings planned by the Illinois House Committee
on Redistricting were announced today by Illinois House Speaker
Michael J. Madigan, the panel’s co-chairman.
"Gathering public
comment is one of the most important roles this committee has
to undertake. In the coming weeks we want to hear from residents
in every region of the state concerning their thoughts on legislative
and Congressional redistricting plans, " Madigan said.
Madigan and the panel’s other co-chairman,
House Minority Leader Lee Daniels said the hearings will begin
at 9 a.m., Tuesday in Room 114 of the State House, Springfield.
A second session is planned for 9 a.m., April 27 at Room 16-503
of the James R. Thompson Center, 100 West Randolph Street, Chicago.
Locations and dates for additional subcommittee hearings throughout
the state will be announced next week.
A similar Illinois Senate committee held
a hearing in the State House today. A second hearing is planned
for Room 16-503 April 30 in Chicago.
Madigan also announced a legislative web
site devoted to the redistricting process. A vast array of information
will be available at www.ilredistricting.org.
Citizens will be able to access information
about the redistricting process, examine population data and track
the schedule for the overall redistricting activity.
As the legislative committee hearings
are part of efforts to fashion a plan redistricting the state’s
118 representative, 59 senate and 19 Congressional districts based
on the data derived from the recently completed 2000 federal census.
The Illinois Constitution requires the district to be "compact,
contiguous and substantially equal in population."
The Illinois House Redistricting Committee
is composed of 22 members.
