DURBIN
RECEIVES
IVI-IPO ENDORSEMENT
Chicago The Independent Voters of Illinois
Independent Precinct Organization on Tuesday announced their
endorsement of U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) in the 2002 U.S. Senate
race.
I am honored to receive the IVI-IPO endorsement.
I have worked throughout my career to work across party lines to
advance sound, common-sense laws to enhance the quality of life
for people in Illinois, Durbin said.
I remain committed to building bipartisan
coalitions to reform our healthcare system, support public education,
protect our environment and provide progressive tax relief for working
families, Durbin said.
The IVI-IPO is a not-for-profit, non-partisan, independent
political organization with a commitment to open, honest government
in Illinois. IVI-IPO, in existence since 1944, is a strong supporter
of campaign finance reform.
Durbin co-sponsored and voted for the bipartisan campaign
finance reform legislation passed by the Senate in March 2001 and
signed into law by the president. The bill, when enacted after this
election, will ban soft money in federal elections, provide a reasonable
updating of federal limits on individual contributions to reflect
inflation and increase the accountability and disclosure requirements
for sponsors of campaign advertising.
The passage of McCain-Feingold was a solid
first step toward campaign finance reform, but there is more to
be done. If re-elected, I will continue to address this issue in
the Senate, Durbin said.
Durbin also voted for a Constitutional amendment
to allow Congress and states to ser reasonable spending and contribution
limits and supports efforts to reduce the cost of broadcast air
time for political candidates.
