Durbin
for U.S. Senate
While we haven't agreed with every decision he has
made during the past six years, we believe Sen. Richard Durbin should
be returned to the U.S. Senate.
Durbin has secured funding for road and mass transit programs in this
state and has secured grant money for other important issues, like
emergency funding to fight the West Nile virus. His views have been
moderate and have represented the state.
His Republican opponent, Jim Durkin, says our senator
has been "ineffective" in Washington. While we disagree,
Durkin's criticism of the slow pace for O'Hare's expansion plans
is duly noted.
While Durbin has made a lot of noise about getting
this plan passed, nothing has happened. O'Hare is critical to this
area and this state's economy and action should be
taken on this matter soon.
But any time an incumbent is challenged, the burden
of proof is on the challenger to provide compelling reasons why
a change is needed. In this race, Durkin has not laid out convincing
evidence that change is sorely needed.
