| Veterans With gratitude for their service to our country, I believe the United States must support our Veterans to assure they have access to affordable, quality healthcare, and solid veterans' benefits. As dean of the Illinois delegation, I've formed regional coalitions to protect veterans' hospitals throughout the state. I co-sponsored legislation, which became law, to study the link between veterans' illnesses and service in the Gulf War and provide benefits for Persian Gulf War-related illnesses. Under threat of closure, I worked with Sen. Peter Fitzgerald and Rep. Mark Kirk to ensure that the North Chicago Veterans Administration Hospital remained open for both inpatient and outpatient services. Additionally, I've helped broker an agreement to modernize the facility through plans to form a partnership between North Chicago and Great Lakes Naval Base. Although the Illinois delegation, including myself, lost our fight to stop the Department of Veterans Affairs' recent decision to close inpatient care at Lakeside Veterans Administration Hospital and move it to West Side Veterans Administration Hospital, the additional cooperation between the North Chicago Veterans Hospital and the Great Lakes Naval Training Station is encouraging. This is something we have been pushing for several years. It is a way to save taxpayer dollars, provide quality medical care for those who are in the United States Navy and to more fully utilize the modern facilities of the North Chicago Veterans Hospital. |
