Minimum Wage

I support an increase in the minimum wage of $1.50 over three years. Today's minimum wage, $5.15 per hour, leaves the typical family of three around $3,000 below the poverty level - even if a parent works full-time, year-round. More than 60 percent of minimum wage workers are women, and 20 percent of those are single mothers. Almost 40 percent of minimum wage earners are their family's sole breadwinner. It is likely that almost every additional cent they earn will be recycled back into the economy. Approximately 395,000 Illinoisans would benefit from an increase in the minimum wage.

Because of Republican opposition, every minimum-wage worker has been denied more than $5,200 in earnings since Jan. 1, 1999 - the date the Democratic legislation to increase the minimum wage would have taken effect.
