Gay/Lesbian
Rights
The U.S. government must help to end discrimination based on race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation. I am an original cosponsor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would protect gay, lesbian and bisexual Americans in employment by prohibiting employment discrimination based on sexual orientation.
I am also an original cosponsor of legislation to expand federal jurisdiction over violent hate crimes committed because of real or perceived sexual orientation, gender or disability. Current federal law does not cover hate crimes based on these factors, and I believe we must prevent senseless violence such as the death of Matthew Shepard.
I aim to be a leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS. I've worked for increased funding for the Ryan White Act programs, HOPWA (a housing program for people with AIDS), and other HIV/AIDS services.
